What is a design system?
A design system is a collection of guidelines, components, tools, and resources that work together to create a consistent and cohesive user experience across a digital user interface such as a website, mobile app, kiosk, watch etc.
Produced in specialist applications such as Figma, design systems include all fundamental design elements such such as colour palette and typography, interactive elements (e.g. buttons, controls, carousels), page furniture (e.g. headers, footers, navigation etc), page templates and more.
These design and development standards ensure visual and functional consistency, making it quick and easy for designers and developers to collaborate and maintain a unified look and feel throughout the entire digital product when creating screen designs.
When to use a design system?
When existing design systems need to be updated, when new design systems are required (e.g. new services, rebranding), or when there’s no existing design system.
