What are depth interviews?


What is it?

One-on-one interviews used to gain detailed insight into a user’s behaviours, attitudes, perceptions, and experiences with an existing or proposed product or service. 

Conducted by a skilled interviewer, this method allows for a deep exploration of specific topics, often following a semi-structured list of questions that ensures key areas are covered while still allowing the conversation to flow naturally. 

By creating a comfortable environment and encouraging open and honest feedback, the interviewer can uncover underlying motivations, pain and pleasure points, and other nuanced experiences that might not be revealed through other research methods. 

Depth interviews are particularly valuable in understanding complex user interactions, emotions, and preferences, providing rich data that can inform and shape the design process.

When to use depth interviews?

It makes most sense to conduct these in the early stages of development.

Scenarios could include:

  • When you need to understand more about your users’ opinions and reactions to an existing or proposed product or service.
  • When you want to generate new ideas.
  • When quantitative data (e.g. surveys, analytics) needs context.
